Hello everyone and welcome to another post. If you are new here my name is Annaliese and I bring magic into real life. Today I bring you an inspirational story and message from the famous literary sisters - the Brontes and their home in Haworth. It wasn’t until I was older that I realised how much I had grown up in awe and wonderment of the Bronte family, particularly the three sisters, Emily, Charlotte and Anne. I lived half an hour away from Haworth, where the Bronte’s lived, and wrote their now exceptionally famous stories, such as Wuthering Heights.
The quaint village and their house are open to the public and are nothing short of gripping. I highly recommend going. I visited several times as a child and as a teen, and it’s only two decades later that I can track back my interest in these sisters. The sheer determination and love these women had to write, in times technically they weren’t supposed to, inspired me and resonated with me more than I knew at the time. Did a life force already know my purpose before me? I truly believe so.
The three sisters hid their stories by writing on paper so small it was hardly readable and disguised their names as authors due to being female. To stand in the rooms where they wrote and, for example, see the table Emily etched her initial E onto (still visible today) as she wrote Wuthering Heights, is utterly fascinating.
I read a letter Emily wrote to one of her sisters unsure how Wuthering Heights would be received… I hope she knows the iconic success she and the others created. The Bronte Parsonage deserves a Witchy Wanderings post of its own, but for now, enjoy this profound message from Charlotte.
It is a favourite quote of mine from Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre. Published in 1847 under her pen name Currer Bell.
“Women are supposed to be calm generally: but women feel just as men feel; they need exercise for their faculties and a field for their efforts, as much as their brothers do; they suffer from too rigid a restraint, to absolute stagnation precisely as men would suffer; and it is narrow minded in their more privileged fellow-creatures to say that they ought to confine themselves to making puddings and knitting stockings, to playing on the piano and embroidering bags. It is thoughtless to condemn them, or laugh at them, if they seek to do more or learn more than custom has pronounced necessary for their sex.”
